World Population Day

The Limpopo Department of Social Development commemorated the 2014 World Population Day on the 04 November 2014.

The commemoration took place in Sekhukhune District, Greater Tubatse Local Municipality at Mafarafara Village. The event was held successfully targeting 100 people inclusive of Magoshi, Executive Mayor of Tubatse Municipality and his council, Social Development National office, NDA, SASSA and GCIS. Head of Department Mme Daisy Mafubelu gave the purpose of the event and outlined the aims and objectives of the Department on the development of Mafarafara village.

The main aim of the event was to launch a research report booklet which talks about the Demographic, Social and Economic profile of Mafarafara village. The report is based on primary household data collected from Mafarafara village. Findings from the study show that Mafarafara village is underdeveloped with limited access to social services and infrastructure. Mafarafara village is also relatively small both geographically and in terms of population size with an estimated population of around 727 housed in 140 households.

The world population day is an annual event commemorated on the 11th July on which the world’s population reached 5billion in 1987. Each year the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) assigns a theme for commemorating the World Population Day.
