Schoemansdal Youth Camp


            

The Department of Social Development held its annual Youth Camp in Schoemansdal Environmental Education Centre in Makhado Municipality from the 01st -05th September 2014. The main objective of the camp is,

  • to create a cadre of community activists and to develop value-based leaders and social change facilitators,
  • to inculcate the spirit of responsible and patriotic citizenry, to develop ambassadors that will carry the baton for the future,
  • to create capacity to deal with youth issues in the province and
  • to intensify youth action and involvement in the fight against the scourge of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and other social ills.

The facilitation of the programme was led by the host the Schoemansdal staff. During the opening ceremony presentations were done about Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Teenage pregnancy, Job Preparedness, Leadership, Entrepreneurship Development and Nation Building and Social Cohesion (Patriotism). For the whole week the youth enjoyed several team building activities like adventure course, no arms no legs, Houdini, foot Rogaine, letteria course, rafting, mountain climbing, co-operation course, cable sliding, rock climbing, low ropes, formula 1, archery and tug of war.

The provincial youth camp is a continuous activity to be held annually to strengthen youth mobilization and partnership/stakeholders engagement. It also strengthens partnerships with NGO’s that are involved in youth issues and Camps. The camp attracted 200 youth from the five districts of the province. On arrival they were given orientation, provided with camp equipment and material.

  • National DSD and Southern African Association for Youth Clubs officials brought immense experience in the camp. DSD Youth Camp is a National DSD initiative that takes place at all nine provinces of the Republic of South Africa. In December all youth from different spheres of the country will meet in one camp to strengthen youth mobilization and partnership/stakeholders engagement.
